Backup Power and Why It Matters

Severe weather is becoming more frequent and dangerous across the country and around the world. In 2016 the United States experienced 15 weather-related disasters according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Hurricanes, tornadoes, flooding, blizzards, drought and other extreme weather events cost nearly 49 billion dollars in damages and killed 138 people – backup power is a very crucial item in these situations.

As the number of severe weather emergencies rises so too does the risk of power failures. In mid-September, Hurricane Irma hit the Southeastern coast and caused one of the largest power outages in US History. Despite the deployment of thousands of electricians from as far away as Canada to repair the damaged infrastructure, thousands of homes and businesses were without power for more than 4 days.

An extended blackout in dangerous conditions is difficult to endure. Households are unable to preserve food, cook, heat water to bathe or maintain safe indoor temperatures. Businesses lose precious productivity and revenue needed to pay employees. The elderly who are highly susceptible to the effects of extreme hot or cold are left vulnerable and those with medical conditions requiring equipment like nebulizers may even risk losing their lives.

Those are just a few of the numerous reasons that backup power sources such as standby and portable generators are so important. A backup generator provides the ability to maintain function and safety at home in blackout conditions during which leaving may not be a safe option. A commercial grade standby generator allows businesses and institutions like hospitals to remain at work when the grid is down.
