Jay Lloyd Interview – A Family Tradition at LES Facility Service
Jay Lloyd is a third generation member of the Lloyd’s Electric Service team, a tradition started by his father, grandfather and eventually his mother. Jay is the current Vice President of the company and has been working in the family business for over 20 years. He was kind enough to take a few moments to talk about the company’s newly expanding LES Facility Service division. Here is our Jay Lloyd interview:
Question: I understand that the expansion of the facilities service division was a natural transition for LES, How did it begin?
Jay Lloyd: It began with the idea of creating a one-stop shop business model for commercial and industrial electrical, HVAC, generators, solar arrays, fiber optics, datacom, etc., with the focus on facilities services. We are licensed in Tennessee and all the surrounding states for mechanical and electrical work but if an issue arises that we can’t take care of in-house, we have help. Over the last 36 years, we have built relationships with other service providers that we trust. Those connections allow us to focus on the needs of a facility offering a broad spectrum of services that we can provide in-house and across the board.
We usually begin with a facility review to discover what we can offer as far maintenance and service plans.
Q: What will this expansion mean for area commercial and industrial facilities?
JL: Companies will have a single number to call for all of their maintenance needs rather than trying to find resources for each service area. Lloyd’s Electric services their facility while the client focus remains on their business.
A lot of times you have circumstances like an HVAC system that fails due to a weakened electrical system. That is a compound problem. The business owner might call an HVAC tech, pay that fee, then still have to contact an electrician and wait for them to come out to have the electrical system resized to handle the HVAC unit. We see issues like this everyday and we have all the resources to correct them. Our goals are to maintain accurate results, provide effective solutions and conduct business with transparency.
Q: Tell me a little about what you like about working with Lloyd’s Electric Service, Inc. and the new LES Facility Service?
JL: It’s a family business that was started by my grandfather and father in 1982. My mom came on board in 1988 to help out and then I started when I was in high school and came back after earning my degree – that is a legacy that I am very proud of.
I have also learned quite a bit. I’m responsible for a lot in our company and I want that culture we have in our family to continue into our business. I believe that even though our people are not related by blood, they are like extended family because we do whatever we can to take care of them and in return, they take care of us by performing the quality work that makes our company such a success.
Q: What advice would you give to other community business leaders?
JL: Managing people is managing personalities. Sometimes you have a person with great ideas and potential, they just need someone to tell them to go ahead and do it. You have to listen to your staff and hear what they are saying. They are looking for guidance and backup.
Q: Is there anything else you’d like to talk about?
I’d like to mention our relationship with Generac Power Systems because we have partnered with the very best in the market as far as standby power generators for home, commercial and industrial use. We have a great relationship with them and they have partnered with other manufacturers to make a superior quality product.
